Every year in February we have bird visitors that really brighten the days. This year's special guests were 3 pair of blue birds (not blue jays!). It's the first time we have ever had blue birds and they are beautiful! They visited us on 2 cold and snowy weekends. We have noticed that February is the first time we see robins, too. Other year have brought us mocking birds and cedar waxwings. Enjoy!

Two Photos in State of the Art Gallery, Ithaca

More good news! Both photos below were accepted in the Annual Juried Photography Show at State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca, NY.

The show will open Wednesday, February 29th at noon and run through Saturday March 31, 2012.

The Opening Reception is Friday, March 2nd 5:30 to 8pm.

I hope you can stop by. Ithaca is a great town with terrific restaurants and shops plus all those gorges and waterfalls!

Reception/Exhibit at Nazareth College Casa Italiana

Months of planning culminated in a reception to mark the opening of my exhibit "Spirit of the South: A Photo Exhibit Celebrating the Beauty of Southern Italy" at Nazareth College's Casa Italiana. I can't begin to thank everyone enough for coming Sunday afternoon (2/12/12). I truly appreciate your show of support, enthusiasm and friendship.

If you didn't get there Sunday the exhibit will be there until May 25th. The Casa hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to take a brochure with additional info and photos.

While I forgot to take pictures, or have anyone else do it, here are a few that I took the week before when we hung the show.

Exhibit "Spirit of the South" at Nazareth College Casa Italiana

My Italian roots are in Cautano, a small village in the Campania region of southern Italy. My family there is as dear to me as my family in the US. I love sharing meals and laughter with them, discussing our cultural differences and similarities, and visiting and re-visiting places where my grandparents once lived.

In August 2011 I combined a visit with my family with a visit to Matera, in the remote southern region of Basilicata. My interest in this area began when I read Carlo Levi’s masterpiece Cristo si e’ fermato a Eboli in Italian class at Nazareth College. Levi’s poignant description of life in this forgotten place, the thousands of years of history, the architecture, the geography, and the plight of the people captured my imagination. I just had to see it with my own eyes...and my camera.

From February 4 – May 25, 2012 a selection of photographs of this trip will be on display in the Casa Italiana LeChase Lounge at Nazareth College. In this exhibit you will see images of these less well-known places - the historic, the modern, wide vistas and intimate corners, city and village, in the bright sun of

“il mezzogiorno” and the shadows of night.

Please join me at the opening reception on Sunday February 12, 2012 from 3-5 p.m. at the Casa Italiana at Nazareth College.

Photo Projects

I have had some fun and success reproducing and restoring paintings and photographs. The two girls is a photo of a 30x40" painting on canvas that a friend wanted reproduced. I photographed it and adjusted it in Photoshop Elements 9. Then I enlarged the image file to 30 x 40" and it was printed on canvas and stretched on a wooden canvas frame at Lumiere Photo in Rochester (BIG THANKS to Mark & Patrick for their expertise). It looks amazingly like the original!

The photo of the little boy is of my father, circa 1925. The original is a 1.25 x 2 inch photo that I have had for a while. It has suffered from time and is cracked in a few places. In this case I used a macro lens to get a large, very sharp image of the original, restored the cracks and adjusted the color in Photoshop Elements 9. Again it was printed at Lumiere Photo, this time on Hanhemuhl Rag Pearl paper which gave it a nice, old-time feel. The reproductions look great! I framed them and gave them to my mother, sister, nieces and nephew as Christmas gifts.

The couple is my father-in-law and his sister, probably around 1940. I received the scan a few years ago from a family member and again did the restoration in PSE9. This photo was more damaged with cracks and scratches but it came out nice. As the scan I received was not a high resolution image file I have not yet printed it and am not sure how it will look. I'll let you know.

Some of my photos accompanied a story Oprah did on a family that endured some terrible domestic violence. Her program showed how the family has recovered and succeeded in recent years. The younger son has been very involved and successful in theater and I had the privilege of photographing him in several productions. He has a wonderful future! I wish them all the best.
Yes, I photographed the TV last night. The last image says "Photographs Light Touch Photos". It's small and hard to read but it's there!

Carpenter Falls, Skaneateles Lake

Yesterday our adventure took us to Carpenter Falls at the south end of Skaneateles Lake. Still not a lot of fall color but it was a beautiful day for a ride and a hike!

Thanks to all who came to the opening reception of my new exhibit at the Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union in Geneva last Thursday. I really appreciate your support and friendship. We spent our anniversary at Esperanza Mansion near Penn Yan. What beautiful views of Keuka Lake from the patio.

I had a good time getting photographing the clover - they are really pretty up close!

There was a turkey vulture in the tree behind the mansion. They have a face I wonder if even their mother can love! He certainly gave me a good show.

They saw my work last spring at Billsboro Winery and apparently liked it enough to invite me to display in their bank. This week I will meet with the marketing team and learn more about the details. We checked out the bluebells of Farmington today. The park is nice - only a little muddy in a few spots. The flowers are starting to blossom but definitely not at their peak. When they are they will be everywhere. If anyone knows what the little yellow flowers are please leave me a comment. Thanks!

Great Smoky Mountains!

We just returned from a week in the Great Smoky Mountains. Spring has already sprung there and the air was warm and soft. The dogwoods were in bloom and we did get some beautiful light for photography. Mostly I was reminded of the importance of slowing down as the first step in the creative process, and to not be attached to the outcomes. Just do your best work and trust the process. Thank you Nancy.

I went to the Rochester Orchid Show today. The displays were beautiful and I was able to capture a few blooms with my camera. Sometimes they are difficult to photograph because of the way the display is set up, the lighting, too many people to set up and take time for a good shot, and sometimes just because it's hard to capture their beauty. I think I was quite successful though. I hope you enjoy them. More in my web gallery.

High Falls Photo Show

I learned today that this photos was selected by a rather prestigious jury to be in the Photographer's Path show at the High Falls Gallery, Rochester, NY. Two of the jurors took the trouble to include very positive comments!
The opening reception is Sunday March 20 from 3-6 and the show runs through April 29. It is a very good show - I got a sneak preview today. I hope you can come!

Opening reception at SOAG, Ithaca, NY

The opening reception for the 22nd Annual Juried Photography Show at State Of the Art Gallery was Friday night. I drove down after work and was pleased to see that my photos were displayed right in the front where they can be seen from outside as easily as from inside! I was also in awe as I looked around at all the other images! Every one a top notch work of art. I am very honored to be included. Here are three photos I took from outside the gallery looking in.
